A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
