Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
